The European Peacock Butterfly or Aglais io, is found across the temperate parts of Europe and Asia. Its name is derived from Greek myth, meaning Io, the daughter of Inachus, King of Argos (the city state of the Pelopenese, rather than the retail outlet). With a span of 50 to 55 mm, its wings are red with with black, blue or yellow ‘eyes’ which are believed to deter predators.
